Problem Statement

Modern AI-assisted development tools (like Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) are becoming essential for developers. These tools use the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to access external data sources and tools. Currently, there is no standardized way for AI assistants to access Maven-specific information such as:

  • Historical discussions and decisions from mailing lists
  • Issue tracking data from Jira and GitHub
  • Source code analysis across Maven projects
  • Build and project metrics

Without MCP integration, AI tools cannot effectively assist with Maven development, maintenance decisions, or understanding the project's history and context.

Current State / Starting Point

The maven-mcps project (maven-mcps.netlify.app) already provides a foundation with several MCP servers, including:

  • Mail MCP: Searches and analyzes dev@ and users@ mailing list archives (2002-present)
  • GitHub MCP: Access to Maven repositories, issues, and pull requests
  • Atlassian MCP: Connection to Apache Jira (legacy issues) and Confluence (wiki documentation)

This is not a complete list; additional MCP servers are available and more can be developed.

Expected Outcomes / Benefits

  1. Source MCP: Expose all Maven projects via Language Server Protocol (LSP) as MCP resources, enabling AI tools to navigate, understand, and analyze Maven source code semantically

  4. Number of open tickets over time
  5. Ticket resolution times
  6. Contributor activity patterns
  7. Build success/failure trends

  8. Extension of Existing MCPs: Enhance capabilities of existing MCP servers (e.g., Maven Tools MCP for Maven Central integration) with additional features such as security/vulnerability data, transitive dependency analysis, license compliance, and Maven plugin intelligence

There was a concern that general-purpose AI tools may supersede Maven-specific MCP servers over time. The proposal should emphasize the value of domain-specific context (mailing list archives, Jira history, Maven-specific conventions) that general-purpose tools cannot provide.
